Connect Horokiwi!

Recently, I've been talking a lot about freeing the internet in Wellington by spreading excess bandwidth from various 'net connections across a city-wide mesh. But this is a best case scenario compared to the situation in Horokiwi. Just ten minutes drive from central Wellington and yet they're trapped at 13kbps! Welcome to the third world. I don't think I've had home internet that slow since Kurt Cobain shot himself.

And you can bet that if it's happening here, there's many other parts of NZ faced with the same problem or worse. Jason Ryan is a resident of Horokiwi, and he's started the Connect Horokiwi blog to build some community momentum and do something about it. We're already embarrassed ourselves enough with the disconnect between our rhetoric and the reality. The message that New Zealand needs faster, cheaper broadband is ringing out louder and clearer than ever before. If you care about this issue, now is the time to speak out.
