Unexpected Structure
Maybe the Discovery One really should have headed to Saturn rather than Jupiter and beyond the Infinite?
The North pole of Saturn is surrounded by a massive hexagonal structure which was first glimpsed by Voyager in the early 1980s. A polar flyby by the Cassini craft in 2006 confirmed that the six sided wave remains stationary in place around the pole.
But that's only the beginning. At Saturn's South pole spins a frightening, almost Lovecraftian looking storm system thousands of kilometers wide, with the eyewall directly above the pole.
The night skies in Wellington have been crystal clear this summer. Now I'm thinking about getting a telescope.
